ZIP tools

Extract a ZIP file

Take out one file, a selection or the whole archive — with the folder structure intact. The extraction happens on your own machine.

  • No upload
  • Pick single files
  • Folders are kept

Every file is checked against the checksum in the archive before you get it. If it is damaged, we say so instead of handing you a broken file.

How it works

Three steps out of the archive

  1. 1

    Open the archive

Drag the ZIP file into the field, or use the file picker. You see the contents straight away, without anything being extracted.

  2. 2

    Choose what you want out

Everything is selected from the start. Untick what you do not need, or search your way to the few files you are after.

  3. 3

    Choose where it is saved

Let the files go to your downloads folder, or point out a folder yourself. If you point out a folder, the subfolders from the archive are written straight to disk.

Benefits

What you get out of it

Only what you need

If you need one PDF out of an archive of three hundred files, you take that one. The rest stays untouched in the archive.

The folders come along

Pick several files and you get them together in one new archive with the structure intact. Point out a folder and the folders are built straight on disk.

Damaged files are caught

We check every file against the checksum in the archive. A file that does not match is reported as damaged instead of saved.

You can cancel

The extraction runs on its own background thread, so the page stays responsive while it works, and «Cancel» actually stops it.

Nothing is uploaded

The archive is read from your disk and extracted in the browser. We measured the traffic during an extraction: not one request carrying file content left.

Safe file names

Names that try to write outside the folder you chose are corrected before anything is saved. You are told which names were changed.

Questions and answers

What people ask

Can I extract just one file?
Yes. Tick that one file and you get it straight down as it is — not wrapped in a new archive.
Do you keep the folder structure?
Yes, both ways out. Download several files as one archive and the folders are inside it. Point out a folder on your machine and the subfolders are created there.
Where do the files end up?
Normally in your browser’s downloads folder. In Chrome and Edge on the desktop you can instead press «Save to folder» and point out where they should go. The browser remembers the folder for next time.
What happens if a file in the archive is damaged?
Then we stop that file and tell you. We compare the extracted content with the checksum the archive states, and never hand you a file we know does not match. The other files are extracted as normal.
Can I cancel along the way?
Yes. Press «Cancel» and the extraction stops. The files on your machine are unchanged — we write nothing before you have chosen where it should be saved.
Why can I not select every file?
Some files cannot be extracted here: files that use a compression method beyond the two common ones. Password-protected files are fine — type the password into the field that appears, and they become selectable. Files we cannot handle are listed with an explanation, but their checkbox is switched off.
Is there a limit to how large the archive can be?
We open archives with up to 20,000 entries, and warn when the total unpacked size becomes very large. The extraction itself is limited by the memory in your machine, not by us.
